Since the application of communication optical cable in 1970s, it has become the backbone of long-distance trunk line, telephone relay in city, underwater and submarine communication, as well as LAN, private network and other cable transmission. It has started to develop to user access network, from fiber to roadside (FTTC), optical fiber to building (FTTB) to fiber to home (FTTH). For various applications and environmental conditions, communication optical cables are laid in overhead, direct buried, pipeline, underwater, indoor and other ways.

Introduction to the foundation of overhead cable, direct buried optical cable, pipeline optical cable and underwater optical cable

Overhead optical cable

Overhead optical cable is a kind of optical cable which is used on the pole. This laying method can use the original overhead open line pole road, save construction cost and shorten the construction period. The overhead cable is installed on the pole, which requires it can adapt to various natural environment. The overhead optical cable is easy to be threatened by natural disasters such as typhoon, ice, flood, and other natural disasters, and also affected by external forces and the weakening of its mechanical strength. Therefore, the failure rate of the overhead optical cable is higher than that of the direct buried and pipeline optical fiber optic cable. It is generally used for long-distance secondary or lower lines, and is suitable for special network optical cable lines or some local special sections.

There are two ways to lay overhead optical cable:

1. wire type: first fasten the cable to the pole with the hanging wire, and then hang the optical cable on the cable with hook. The load of the optical cable is carried by the cable.

2. self supporting type: a self supporting type optical cable is used. The optical cable is of the "8" type, and the upper part is self-supporting line, and the load of the optical cable is carried by the self bearing line.

The laying requirements are as follows:

1. When laying optical cables in flat environment by aerial way, hook hanging shall be used; cable shall be laid in mountainous or steep slope, and cable shall be laid by binding. The cable joint shall be at the position of straight pole easy to maintain, and the reserved optical cable shall be fixed on the pole with reserved support.

2. The U-shaped expansion bend is required for the optical cable of overhead pole road every 3-5 stop bar, and 15m is reserved every 1km.

3. The cable leading up the overhead (wall) shall be protected by galvanized steel pipe, and the pipe mouth shall be blocked with fire-proof mud.

4. The warning signs of optical cables shall be hung every 4 stop bars and special sections such as crossing roads, rivers and bridges.

5. The protection of three-way protective pipe shall be added at the intersection of the air suspension line and power line, and the elongation of each end shall not be less than 1m.

6. The stay wire of electric pole close to the highway shall be covered with light-emitting rod with a length of 2m.

7. In order to prevent the induced current of the suspension wire from hurting people, each pole cable shall be electrically connected with the suspension line. The cable position shall be equipped with the cable type ground wire. The cable shall be connected directly with the liner ring and directly grounded at the terminal.

8. The overhead optical cable is usually 3M away from the ground. When entering the building, it is necessary to penetrate the U-shaped steel protective sleeve on the outer wall of the building, and then extend downward or upward. The aperture of the optical cable entrance is generally 5cm.
